While death metal may have been pioneered by US legends Death and British counterparts like Carcass, the latter part of the genre's first wave was unquestionably dominated by Sweden. Between 1989 and 1991, the country saw the release of several highly influential debuts, including Entombed's seminal 'Left Hand Path', Dismember's 'Like An Everflowing Stream' and this brutal debut by Grave.
'Into the Grave' is a 40-minute blast of raw and visceral (but surprisingly catchy) death metal that has the classic Swedish 'buzz-saw' sound, but is given a unique twist by Ola Lindgren's ultra-low, guttural vocals and an underlying groove that punctuates its doom laden assault. There are also elements of Slayer style thrash on highlights like opener 'Deformed'. This reissue includes the excellent 'Tremendous Pain' EP and a selection of demo tracks as a bonus, with the sound quality being very good throughout.
While none of Grave's subsequent records would come close to matching the quality and sheer intensity of this debut, 'Into the Grave' remains an undisputed genre classic that is an essential purchase for all fans of extreme metal. This Century Media expanded edition is the best version of the album released to date and is highly recommended.
