Italian black/death horde Necromorbid have been at this game for over a decade at this point, and their newest record ‘Ceremonial Demonslaught’ is the latest assault on our eardrums. It has been a long, six year wait to follow 2020’s ‘Sathanarchrist Assaulter’, which I had really enjoyed, as it took no prisoners and enschewed progression for pure nihilistic violence. I’m expecting pretty much the same from ‘Ceremonial Demonslaught’ to be honest. It is out now through Gods Ov War Productions.

Unsurprisingly, ‘Ceremonial Demonslaught’ is just a relentless punishment machine from start to finish. That scathing noise intro ‘Ceremonial Initiation’, which serrates the ears ready to receive the black/death hatred tornado leading to ‘Perverted Abhorrence Domain’, a track that feels literally poisonous to listen to. Blasphemous vocals spew bile over some of the most filthy riffing you’ll hear this year, with a battery of drums all fighting for air in this cloying, murky atmosphere. There are some really memorable guitar leads in here though, blackened thrash riffs abound in the speedy ‘Forbidden Ghastly Curse’ while wailing black melody lines spiral from the grim ‘Blasphemous Incantation from Beyond’. The music is tight and ferocious, the vocals from Dysangelium are spectacularly ugly at times,  and everything feels very visceral. As closer ‘Final Demonslaught’ comes full circle in its screeching death throes of noise, you feel beaten, bloodied but uncowed because this album inspires power in the listener, an evil and ancient power.

You know what you’re going to get with Necromorbid, but that doesn’t make it any less fun and reckless. A dangerously catchy record of ugly, fetid black/death metal; like a nail studded baseball bat to the hamstrings, ‘Ceremonial Demonslaught’ is here to break you and leave you humming some of those riffs through broken teeth and bloody lips. A self flagellating joy to behol
