Formed in 2005 by multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Guido Saint Roch, Ysengrin has somewhat quietly compiled a discography that is worthy of the increased attention that it has more recently begun to receive following the release of its second full-length album, “To Endotaton,” in 2012. Its previous releases, including a handful of demos and splits in addition to its first album, were initially pressed in relatively small quantities and thus did not receive the more widespread distribution they deserved.
With this CD re-release by Caverna Abismal Records, their 2011 debut album, "Tragedies – Liber Hermetis," is brought back to life, allowing their exceptional talent to be appreciated by a broader audience.
Ysengrin’s music defies easy classification, unlike many of the more predictable releases in the underground metal scene. Instead of being pigeonholed into black, death, or doom metal, Ysengrin masterfully blends elements of all these subgenres to forge their unique style of Hermetic Dark Metal. This distinctive sound can be attributed to the singular vision of Guido Saint Roch, ensuring the music remains uncompromised and true to his artistic intent. However, for any musical project to remain relevant, it must evolve. "Tragedies – Liber Hermetis" showcases the band's exploration of sounds reminiscent of Hellenic black metal, with themes that delve into both mystical and historical aspects of human existence.
The album is visually enriched by the artwork of Marko Marov, whose illustrations grace the cover of the gatefold jacket and include an original drawing for each song’s lyrics in a foldout booklet. Additionally, the lyrics, originally written in French, have been translated into English for this release.
